I remember the flyers for parties in college that had BYOB. What is BYOD?

If you ever walked through a college dorm in the late '90s or early 2000s, you likely saw flyers for parties with a bold BYOB disclaimer. Back then, "Bring Your Own Beer" was about saving the host money and ensuring you had exactly what you liked to drink. In the modern office, that acronym has evolved into BYOD Bring Your Own Device and it’s doing for the boardroom exactly what it did for the dorm room: providing total flexibility and cutting costs.

What is BYOD in the Office?

In the Audio Visual (AV) world, BYOD refers to the practice of employees bringing their own personal or assigned laptops, tablets, or smartphones into a meeting space to host or present.

Instead of a room being "locked" into a specific computer bolted under the table, a BYOD-enabled room allows you to walk in, plug in a single cable (usually USB-C or HDMI), or connect wirelessly, and instantly take control of the room's high-end cameras, microphones, and displays.

Key Benefits of a BYOD Setup

Platform Agnosticism: You aren't forced to use a specific software. Whether you prefer Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet, you can run it from your own laptop while using the room's professional hardware.

Familiarity: There is no learning curve for an unfamiliar “in room" computer. You use your own files, your own shortcuts, and your own login credentials.

Cost Efficiency: Organizations save money by not having to purchase, maintain, and license dedicated PCs for every single huddle room or office.

Future-Proofing: As technology evolves, you only need to upgrade your personal device rather than overhaul the entire room's infrastructure.

BYOD vs. BYOM: A Subtle Difference

As you explore this landscape, you might also hear the term BYOM (Bring Your Own Meeting). While BYOD is the broader umbrella of using your own hardware, BYOM is specifically about hosting a video conference from your laptop while "bridging" into the room's peripherals like the high definition camera and ceiling mounted mic arrays to make sure remote participants can see and hear everyone clearly.

Remember

Just like those old college parties, the goal of BYOD is to make the experience more personal, more efficient, and most importantly easier on the host.
